He worked in a large Peruvian advertising agency but decided at the age of 23 to leave his native country for New York. Boris arrived there – not knowing a word of English - with only his suitcase, some illustrations, his violin and $80 in his pocket. He hoped to start his own advertising agency. Thanks to Fellow Peruvian expats he found a small inexpensive house and began making illustrations in a small agency for jars, pots and pans, refrigerators, bicycles, etc... He acquired a sense of detail and a mastery of the different styles. It is during this time that he met his wife Doris who would give him two children - a daughter, Maya, and a son Dorian. According to Boris his children contributed greatly to his artistic conception.
His real career begins after he sold to a publication house a canvas representing a warrior fighting against a creature from Greek mythology. His posters and his cards are noticed by the big publishing houses publishing heroic-fantasy including Marvel. Numerous people ask him to paint book covers, des film posters, disc pockets, video jackets… In 1978, the book Boris Vallejo's Fantastic Art, made him recognised all over the world, and he has published a calendar every year since 1981. He has designed more than 300 covers, including Tarzan, Conan, Star Trek, Star Wars, Penthouse and the Comics magazine Heavy Metal.
Boris like muscles and has said "It's always been a fascination for me" and he denies that the bulging biceps and ample bosoms in his work are unrealistic.

Currently married to Julie Bell, Boris has said about her "Now I have somebody who loves this as much as I do, and who understands me like I understand her. At the same time, we are very competitive. We spur each other to try harder... Sometimes I look over my shoulder to see what she's doing."

Boris knows how to develop through its paintings a very personal hyperrealistic style and has greatly contributed to the world of Fantasy illustration.
